As you can guess by the title the weather wasn't too kind to us today. We started on our journey down to Franz Joseph although our hopes of climbing the glacier were dashed as the full day trip was cancelled for the next day as there has been a lot of rainfall over the last few days but we still had a chance to possibly do a half day hike.
We were dropped at the Glacier Centre in the pouring rain for a brief talk about the half day hike we would possibly be on the next day. We were shown a video of the glacier on a nice sunny day, don't think that is going to happen. After that had finished a women told us there was a 90% chance that even the half day hike would be called off, we were very disappointed at these odds and as it is one of the best activities you can do in New Zealand, we need a lot of luck.
As it was raining we couldn't really do much but our driver told us to walk to the bridge as the river was meant to be at the highest level people had seen it. As the rain seemed to have stopped after we got sorted in the hostel we headed there immediately although it chucked it down after a couple of minutes. The river was very high and powerful, we learnt later that the bridge was only temporary and was just replacing the last one that got swept away.
In the evening we headed to the bar called Monsoon with a slogan “When it rains... we pour” close to our hostel as it was Kerry the kites' Birthday. I played a game of killer pool where I finished 4th just missing out on the prizes. We had a good night getting to know some more of the people on our bus.
